چکیده

Useful sample information can be extracted from the dissipation in frequency modulation atomic force microscopy due to its correlation to important material properties. It has been recently shown that artifacts can often be observed in the dissipation channel, due to the spurious mechanical resonances of the atomic force microscope instrument when the oscillation frequency of the force sensor changes. In this paper, we present another source of instrumental artifacts specific to magnetic force microscopy (MFM), which is attributed to a magnetization switching happening at the apex of MFM tips. These artifacts can cause a misinterpretation of the domain structure in MFM images of magnetic samples. VC 2013 American Institute of Physics. [http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4776669]

Magnetic force microscopy using fabricated cobalt-coated carbon nanotubes probes

Magnetic force microscope ( MFM ) is a powerful technique for mapping the magnetic force gradient above the sample surface. Herein, single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) were used to fabricate MFM probe by dielectrophoresis method which is a reproducible and cost-effective technique. The effect of induced voltage on the deposition manner of carbon nanotubes (CNT) on the atomic force microscope (...

Removal of electrostatic artifacts in magnetic force microscopy by controlled magnetization of the tip: application to superparamagnetic nanoparticles

Magnetic force microscopy (MFM) has been demonstrated as valuable technique for the characterization of magnetic nanomaterials. To be analyzed by MFM techniques, nanomaterials are generally deposited on flat substrates, resulting in an additional contrast in MFM images due to unavoidable heterogeneous electrostatic tip-sample interactions, which cannot be easily distinguished from the magnetic ...

Development of an Algorithm for Tip-related Artifacts Identification in AFM Biological Film Imaging

One major drawback identified in atomic force microscopy imaging is the dependence of the image’s precision on the shape of the probe tip. In this paper a simple algorithm is proposed to provide artifact identification signaling in-situ tip features in atomic force microscopy images. The base of the identifications lied when the angle formed between two scanned points was kept the same as the t...

Algorithms for Scanned Probe Microscope Image Simulation, Surface Reconstruction, and Tip Estimation

To the extent that tips are not perfectly sharp, images produced by scanned probe microscopies (SPM) such as atomic force microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy are only approximations of the specimen surface. Tip-induced distortions are significant whenever the specimen contains features with aspect ratios comparable to the tip's. Treatment of the tip-surface interaction as a simple geom...
